Balancing Blood Sugar Levels

Here are some tips about how you can balance your blood sugar (glucose) levels:

1.  Eat smaller amounts, more often.  Spread your food intake more evenly throughout the day.

2.  Add some type of protein to each meal or snack.

3.  Eat complex carbohydrates (whole grain products, vegetables, etc.).

4.  Avoid sugar, simple carbohydrates (sweets, bread, muffins, white flour products, pasta, etc.).

5.  Avoid commercial fruit juices, soda pop, alcohol, etc. (all high in sugar).

Blood Sugar Fluctuations

Healthy blood sugar metabolism of a complex carbohydrate meal or snack:  Complex carbs break down and enter your bloodstream slowly, giving steady energy.  Your pancreas secretes the right amounts of insulin.  Cells are receptive to insulin, allowing glucose into your cells.

Healthy blood sugar metabolism of a simple carbohydrate meal or snack:  Simple carbs break down and your enter bloodstream quickly, giving a quick energy boost (high energy but not sustained) BUT then quickly leave your bloodstream resulting in fatigue, hunger, etc.  Your pancreas secretes large amounts of insulin to handle the excess glucose.  Cells are receptive to insulin, allowing glucose into your cells.

Malfunctioning metabolism of simple carb meal/snack = hypoglycemic reaction:  Quick boost or “sugar rush” followed by a quick “crash”.  Your pancreas secretes very high amounts of insulin.  Cells are not receptive to insulin, causing poor insulin activity (need more to do the job).  This cycle creates an overtired/malfunctioning pancreas.  Low blood sugar levels create intense cravings for “quick boost”/high sugar foods to correct the low level.  A vicious cycle has been created.

Why Do We have Symptoms?

Have you ever wondered why we have symptoms?  Are they just inconvenient annoyances that interrupt our life?  Did you ever stop to realize the importance of symptoms?

Think about your car for a minute.  Say you turn on your car and you notice one of the warning lights is on, let’s say the oil light.  You have 3 choices:

1.  You can choose to visit a mechanic and have the problem diagnosed and corrected.  It may be a simple matter of topping off your oil or you may have to adjust, rebalance, replace or otherwise correct some other matter.  You are glad, in fact even thankful (although annoyed at the inconvenience), the light came on to warn you about the problem before your engine developed a more serious problem.

2.  You can choose to live with the light on and ignore the warning.  If this is your choice, you know you are in for more trouble and it is only a matter of time before the problem gets bigger and you will be forced to deal with the consequences.

3.  You can’t stand the warning light being on and you don’t want to deal with it, so you choose to remove the fuse or cut the wire to the warning light so it doesn’t bother you anymore.  If this is your choice, it is only a matter of time before you will develop a more serious problem.  The problem is still there, you’re just not bothered by the warning light.

Now think about your body.  Say you have yet another headache and you are suffering the discomfort.  You now have 3 choices:

1.  You can choose to seek help and/or figure out the underlying cause of your frequent headaches, so that you can eliminate the cause.  You are glad, in fact even thankful (although annoyed at the inconvenience and pain), the headache warned you of a problem that could have developed into something more serious.  You correct the cause and you no longer develop frequent headaches.

2.  You can choose to live with yet another headache.  After all, you’ve gotten quite used to them.  It’s no big deal and it doesn’t mean anything.  You just happen to be the kind of person who gets lots of headaches and you’ve learned to live with them.

3.  You can’t stand the headache and you have no desire to explore the underlying cause for yet another headache so you reach for the Tylenol or Advil, again, and try to deal with it.  You realize that 1 regular strength tablet used to get rid of the pain, but as time goes by even 2 extra strength tablets don’t work.

Learn to listen and understand what your body is telling you.  Symptoms are messages from your body telling you something needs attention.  The symptoms may be mild at first, but if you do nothing to correct them they will eventually develop into a more serious condition with more serious symptoms.  The body is always striving to achieve optimal health.  The body has incredible wisdom and natural healing mechanisms that are always in motion.  Occasionally the body needs help from you.  Symptoms are its way of communicating those needs to you.
