Living With Celiac Disease

For Henry

I had a question the other day about celiac disease.  I have a nephew with celiac disease.

Celiac disease is a problem some people have with foods that contain gluten.

Gluten is a protein found in foods like bread, crackers, and pasta.

With celiac disease, your immune system attacks the gluten and harms your small intestine when you eat these kinds of foods.

This makes it hard for your body to absorb nutrients that keep you healthy.

Gluten comes from grains like wheat, barley, rye, and triticale.

It’s important to get treatment, because celiac disease can lead to iron deficiency anemia and osteoporosis.

It can also raise your risk of lymphoma.

Celiac disease can slow growth and weaken bones in children.

If it’s not treated, your child can get very sick.

Seek medical attention if your child is losing a lot of weight, has diarrhea, or feels weak and tired for several days with no reason.

Researchers don’t really know what causes celiac disease.

Having certain genes can increase your chance of getting it.

You’re more likely to get celiac disease if a close family member has it.

The main symptoms of celiac disease are gas and bloating, changes in bowel movements, weight loss, feeling very tired, and weakness.

These symptoms may be very mild and go completely unnoticed, or they may be severe and impact daily life.

Some people vomit after they eat gluten.

This is more likely to happen in children than in adults.

Often celiac disease is mistaken for another problem, like a food intolerance or irritable bowel syndrome.

You may be treated for one of these problems first.

To get and stay well, you need to avoid all foods that have gluten.

Don’t eat any foods made with wheat, rye, barley, or triticale.

Don’t drink any beer or ale.

Flours and starches made from rice, corn, buckwheat, potatoes, and soybeans should be okay to eat.

Some foods that are labeled “wheat-free” may still have gluten.

Gluten can be in things you may not expect, like medicine, vitamins, and lipstick.

Be sure to read labels.

Those with “modified food starch” or “hydrolyzed vegetable protein” may contain gluten.

To deal with celiac disease it’s beneficial to:

*Exercise.

*Eat healthy meals.

*Don’t smoke.

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to keep hydrated.

*Optiflora may be taken after each bout of diarrhea to replenish the “good” bacteria.

*Food sensitivities/allergies and diet must investigated and addressed.

*Avoid all dairy until your intestine has healed.

*Avoid sugars, grains, carbs, soda pop, alcohol, caffeine, processed products.

*May be beneficial to lightly steam veggies.

*Increase Omega-3 fats intake.

*Consider a liver, gallbladder and/or colon cleanse.

*Practice good stress and relaxation techniques.

Recommendations:

It’s essential to use:  Vita-Lea, Protein, Optiflora (1 dose after each major bowel movement), Garlic, Herb-Lax, DTX.

It’s important to use:  Alfalfa, B-Complex, Vitamin D, Performance (particularly if severe diarrhea).

It’s beneficial to use:  Vitamin C, Stomach Soothing Complex, Immunity Formula.
