Living With Cirrhosis

I had a question the other day about cirrhosis.

Cirrhosis is a very serious condition in which scarring damages your liver.

When you have cirrhosis, scar tissue replaces healthy tissue and prevents your liver from working like it should.

For example, your liver may stop making enough clotting factors, which can lead to bleeding and bruising.

Bile and poisons may build up in your blood.

Scarring can also cause high blood pressure in the vein that carries blood from your intestines through your liver.

This can lead to severe bleeding in your digestive tract and other serious problems.

Cirrhosis can have many causes.

Some of the main ones include:

>Long-term, heavy use of alcohol.

>Chronic viral hepatitis.

>Autoimmune diseases.

>Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

>Blocked bile ducts.

>Inherited diseases (Wilson’s disease, cystic fibrosis, or hemochromatosis).

Less common causes of cirrhosis include severe reactions to medicines or long-term exposure to poisons, like arsenic.

Some people have cirrhosis without an obvious cause.

You may not have symptoms in the early stages of cirrhosis.

As it progresses, it can cause a number of symptoms, including:

>Extreme tiredness and weakness.

>Nosebleeds and easy bruising.

>Weight loss.

>Belly pain or discomfort.

>Yellowing of your skin (jaundice).

>Itching.

>Fluid buildup in your legs and in your belly.

>Bleeding in your stomach or in your esophagus.

>Confusion.

It’s important to get treated for cirrhosis as soon as possible.

It can be deadly.

Treatment can’t cure cirrhosis.

But it can sometimes prevent or delay further liver damage.

There are things you can do to help limit the damage to your liver and control the symptoms.

To deal with cirrhosis it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily hydrates body and brain cells and flushes toxins (whether thirsty or not!).

*Fresh squeezed lemon juice added to water (warm or room temp) in morning is ideal, but anytime is helpful.

*Consider a liver, gallbladder and/or colon cleanse.

*Increase fresh, raw foods (organic when possible).

*Consider fresh juicing.

*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds (food and environment).

*Decrease overeating at a meal (eat until almost full, then stop).

*Decrease being overweight; maintain an optimal weight.

*Decrease any and all hydrogenated, trans fat, deep-fried foods, etc.

*Decrease products that contain refined sugar.

*Decrease caffeine, soda pop, processed foods, and alcohol.

*Avoid MSG and all artificial sweeteners.
