Living With Guillain-Barre Syndrome

I had a question the other day about Guillain-Barre syndrome.

This is a problem with your nervous system.

It causes muscle weakness, loss of reflexes, and numbness or tingling in your arms, legs, face, and other parts of your body.

This rare condition can cause paralysis and lead to death.

But most people get better and have few lasting problems.

Experts don’t know what causes it.

They think the nerves are attacked by your body’s own immune system, which makes it an autoimmune problem.

In Guillain-Barré syndrome, your immune system attacks the covering of certain nerves, which causes nerve damage.

It usually begins to affect your nerves after you’ve had a viral or bacterial infection.

Symptoms include:

>Numbness or tingling in your hands and feet and sometimes around your mouth and lips.

>Muscle weakness in your legs and arms and the sides of your face.

>Trouble speaking, chewing, and swallowing.

>Not being able to move your eyes.

>Back pain.

Symptoms usually start with numbness or tingling in your fingers and toes.

Over several days, muscle weakness in your legs and arms develops.

After about 4 weeks, you should begin to get better.

You may need to be treated in the hospital for the first few weeks because it can be deadly if weakness spreads to muscles controlling breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure.

You may need 3-6 months or longer to recover.

And you may have to wait several months before you can return to your regular activities.

You may have long-term effects, like numbness in your toes and fingers.

In most cases, these problems won’t get in the way of your daily life.

Some people have more serious problems, like long-term weakness or balance problems.

To deal with Guillain-Barre syndrome it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 10 cups of purified water daily to hydrate body and brain cells and flush toxins (whether thirsty or not!).

*Alfalfa is a good source of vitamin K.  It can be taken in liquid or tablet form.

*Burdock, dandelion, pau d’arco, red clover, sarsaparilla, and yarrow are effective detoxifiers.

*Cordyceps is a Chinese herb that improves memory, helps you assimilate nutrients more efficiently, and increases energy.

*Skullcap and valerian root relax your nervous system.  Taken at bedtime, they aid in preventing insomnia.

*Eat only organically grown foods with no chemical treatments or additives, including eggs, fruits, gluten-free grains, raw nuts and seeds, vegetables, and cold-pressed vegetable oils.

*Eat plenty of raw sprouts and alfalfa, plus foods containing lactic acid, like sauerkraut and dill pickles.  Also good are “green drinks” containing plenty of chlorophyll.

*Eat plenty of dark leafy greens.  These are good sources of vitamin K.

*Don’t consume any alcohol, barley, chocolate, coffee, dairy products, fried foods, highly seasoned foods, meat, oats, refined foods, rye, salt, spices, sugar, tobacco, wheat, or processed, canned, or frozen foods.

*Take a fiber supplement.  Fiber is important for avoiding constipation.

*Never consume saturated fats, processed oils, oils subjected to heat (either in processing or in cooking), or oils stored without refrigeration.

*Avoid stress and anxiety.

*Avoid exposure to heat, like hot baths, showers, sunbathing, and overly warm surroundings, and avoid becoming overheated when working or exercising.  Avoid exhaustion and viral infections.  All of these may worsen symptoms.

*Get periodic massages and regular exercise, and keep mentally active.

*Consider hair analysis to determine heavy metal toxicity.

*Decrease any and all toxic exposures as they can harm your cells.

*Decrease toxic cleaning, laundry and personal care products.

*Decrease indoor and outdoor environmental pollutants.

*Decrease toxins/heavy metals exposure (workplace, hobbies, etc.); avoid aluminum-containing items.

*Avoid MSG and all artificial sweeteners as they are neurotoxins.
