Living With Myositis

I had a question the other day about myositis.

Myositis refers to any condition causing inflammation in muscles.

Weakness, swelling, and pain are the most common myositis symptoms.

Myositis causes include infection, injury, autoimmune conditions, and drug side effects.

Myositis causes can be divided into several categories:

Inflammatory conditions.

Conditions causing inflammation throughout your body may affect your muscles, causing myositis.

Many of these causes are autoimmune conditions where your body attacks its own tissues.

Inflammatory conditions are often the most serious myositis causes, requiring long-term treatment.

Infection.

Viral infections are the most common infections causing myositis.

Common cold and flu viruses, as well as HIV, are just a few of the viruses causing myositis.

Drugs.

Many different medications and drugs can cause temporary muscle damage.

Drugs causing myositis include:

>Statins

>Colchicine

>Plaquenil

>Alpha-interferon

>Cocaine

>Alcohol

Sometimes it’s caused by an interaction between 2 different medications.

Severe myositis caused by medications is rare.

Injury.

Vigorous exercise can lead to muscle pain, swelling, and weakness for hours or days after a workout.

Inflammation contributes to these symptoms, technically making this a form of myositis.

Myositis symptoms after exercise or injury nearly always resolve completely with rest and recovery.

Rhabdomyolysis.

Rhabdomyolysis occurs when muscles break down quickly.

Muscle pain, weakness, and swelling are symptoms of rhabdomyolysis.

Urine may also turn a dark brown or red color.

The main symptom of myositis is muscle weakness.

The weakness may be noticeable or may only be found with testing.

Muscle pain may or may not be present.

The weakness affects large muscle groups, including your neck, shoulders, hips, and back.

Muscles on both sides are usually affected.

The weakness from myositis can lead to falls and make it difficult to get up from a chair or after a fall.

Some people with myositis have muscle pain, but many don’t.

Myositis treatment varies according to the cause.

Myositis caused by infection is usually due to a virus, and no specific treatment is necessary.

Myositis related to a drug is treated by stopping the medication.

To deal with myositis it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.

*Review my post on keeping clean on the inside.

*Breathe easier; purify indoor air.

*Increase essential fats (flax oil, olive oil, Omega-3 oils).

*Consume a 50% raw food diet:  lots of fresh, raw fruits and veggies (organic when possible).  Include fresh juicing.

*Consider liver and colon cleanses.

*Increase exercise, deep breathing, relaxation, stress management and energy techniques.

*Increase fresh air, sunshine, connect to nature, adequate rest.

*Deal with any underlying emotional issues.

*Consider skin brushing, Epsom salt baths, hydrotherapy or add baking soda to bath water.

*Ensure regular (2 per day) bowel movements.

*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds.

*Investigate and eliminate “hidden” allergies/sensitivities.

*Decrease or eliminate any and all hydrogenated, trans fats, and deep-fried foods.

*Decrease or eliminate sugar-laden foods, white flour products, simple carbs.

*Decrease or eliminate processed, instant, chemical-laden, “lifeless” foods.

*Decrease or eliminate smoking, alcohol, coffee, soda pop, processed juices.

*Become educated about all possible side effects and detrimental influences of any medications or treatment procedures you are taking or considering.

*Research and address underlying Candida issues.

*Avoid MSG and artificial sweeteners as they are neurotoxins.

*Explore dental amalgam toxicity.

*Consume plenty of fresh (not canned) pineapple and/or papaya (anti-inflammatory properties).

*Avoid all dairy products.

*Avoid nightshade vegetables (eggplant, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers).
