A Natural Approach To Health
Living With An Abscess
I had a question the other day about an abscess.
An abscess is a tender mass surrounded by a colored area from pink to deep red.
Abscesses are usually easy to feel by touching.
The middle of an abscess is full of pus and debris.
Painful and warm to touch, abscesses can show up any place on your body.
The most common sites are in your armpits (axillae), areas around your anus and vagina (Bartholin gland), the base of your spine (pilonidal), around a tooth, and in your groin.
Inflammation around a hair follicle can also lead to the formation of an abscess, which is called a boil.
Unlike other infections, antibiotics alone won’t usually cure an abscess.
Usually an abscess must open and drain in order for it to get better.
Sometimes an abscess will drain on its own, but usually it has to be opened by a procedure called incision and drainage.
Abscesses are caused by obstruction of oil glands or sweat glands, inflammation of hair follicles, or minor breaks and punctures of your skin.
Germs get under your skin or into these glands, which causes your body’s defenses to try to kill the germs.
The middle of the abscess becomes liquid and contains dead cells, bacteria, and other debris.
This area begins to grow, creating tension under your skin and further inflammation of the surrounding tissues.
Pressure and inflammation cause the pain.
People with weakened immune systems get certain abscesses more often because they have a decreased ability to ward off infections.
To deal with an abscess, it’s beneficial to:
*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily.
*Consuming distilled water with fresh lemon juice, plus 3 cups of echinacea, goldenseal, or suma tea every day is helpful. Goldenseal can also be made into a poultice and applied directly to the abscess. Or, apply alcohol-free goldenseal extract to sterile gauze and place the gauze over the abscess.
*The following herbs are beneficial for healing abscesses and cleansing your blood: burdock root, cayenne, dandelion root, red clover, and yellow dock root.
*A poultice combining lobelia and slippery elm bark is soothing and fights infection.
*Milk thistle, taken in capsule form, is good for your liver and helps cleanse your bloodstream.
*Tea tree oil, applied externally, is a potent natural antiseptic that kills infectious organisms without harming healthy cells. Mix 1 part tea tree oil with 4 parts water and apply the mixture with a cotton ball 3 times a day. This will destroy the bacteria, quicken healing, and prevent the infection from spreading.
*Eat fresh pineapple daily. Pineapple contains bromelain, an enzyme that fights inflammation and helps healing.
*Include garlic and onions in your diet. They’re high in sulfur and can help to both prevent and cure abscesses.
*Add kelp to your diet for beneficial minerals.
*Perform a liquid fast using fresh juices for 24-48 hours.
*For an external abscess, apply honey to the affected area. Honey destroys bacteria and viruses, apparently by drawing all the moisture out of them.
*To cleanse the affected area, apply chlorophyll liquid mixed with water several times a day.
*If you must take antibiotics, supplement your diet with B vitamins and products containing “friendly” bacteria, like acidophilus and yogurt.
*If pain, redness, swelling, bleeding, or discharge increases or continues for more than a week, call your doctor.
*Eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies daily.
*Increase your raw food consumption.
*Choose organic whenever possible.
*Increase essential fats (Omega-3, Flax oil, fish oil).
*Decrease or eliminate acid-forming foods and drinks (coffee, soda pop, dairy, red meat, sugar, processed foods, white flour products).
*Decrease exposure to toxic products (cleaners, laundry, personal care, etc.)
