Living With Dandruff

I had a question the other day about dandruff.

Those dry, white flakes of skin you brush off your collar or shoulders are harmless.

But it can be embarrassing and itchy.

Dandruff isn’t really about your hair, or how often you wash it.

Instead, it’s about the skin on your scalp.

Skin cells that grow and die off too fast are the problem.

Exactly why that happens isn’t clear.

A very common fungus called malassezia may contribute to dandruff.

This fungus lives on the scalp of most healthy adults without causing any problems.

One theory is the immune system of someone with dandruff may overreact to the fungus.

Dandruff may get worse when you’re stressed.

Cold, dry winters can trigger dandruff or make it worse, too.

One common cause is seborrheic dermatitis, or seborrhea.

Some people with dandruff may also have seborrheic dermatitis in other areas of their body, like their ears and the center of their face.

The symptoms of dandruff include:

>Flakes of skin ranging from small and white to large, greasy and yellow.

>Itchy flaking appearing on your scalp or eyebrows or around your hairline, ears, or nose.

If the scaling is greasy and yellow and doesn’t respond to dandruff shampoos, you may have seborrheic dermatitis and need more aggressive treatment to relieve the redness, itching, and flaking.

Dandruff is harmless so you can treat it at home.

One quick way to get started is to brush your hair from your scalp down with steady, firm strokes.

This will carry oil from your scalp, where it can cause dandruff, along your hair strands, where it’ll keep your hair shiny and healthy.

When shampooing your hair, rub the shampoo into your scalp well.

Leave the shampoo on your head for 5 minutes, or as directed, before you rinse.

Rinse thoroughly.

Any leftover shampoo may irritate your skin.
