Living With Digital Mucous Cysts

I had a question the other day about digital mucous cysts.

Digital mucous cysts (DMCs) are benign ganglion cysts of your fingers or toes, usually located at the end joints or in the nail fold.

The cause of these cysts is uncertain.

Often, these cysts are asymptomatic and don’t require treatment.

When treatment is needed, medical therapies and surgical interventions may be tried.

Recurrence is common.

How digital mucous cysts form is unknown.

Currently, it’s believed the cysts arise from mucoid degeneration of connective tissue and possibly coexist with osteoarthritis.

Evidence of osteoarthritis is common at the site of the cysts.

Digital mucous cysts make up 10-15% of the total types of cysts.

They are most often asymptomatic and benign.

Pain can occur from the impingement of cysts on adjacent nerve fibers.

Larger cysts can disfigure the affected digit.

Nail deformities can occur.

Women are affected more often than men.

Digital mucous cysts usually occur in your 50s to 70s, but they may be seen as early as the teenage years or among the elderly population.

The mean age of onset is 60 years.

The cysts may appear suddenly or develop over a period of months.

Grooving of the nail may precede the development of the cyst itself by up to 6 months.

Intermittent spontaneous discharge of cyst contents can occur, and, in many cases cysts may disappear spontaneously.

As cysts enlarge, pain is an increasingly common complaint.

Digital mucous cysts are usually solitary, round-to-oval, dome-shaped, firm-to-fluctuant with overlying skin that ranges from very thin to moderately thick.

The cysts contain a viscous, gelatinous fluid that may be clear or yellow-tinged.

Treatment for digital mucous cysts (DMCs) includes the following:

>Soaks

>Local heat

>Massage

>Occlusive treatment with topical steroids and Cordran tape

>Home remedies – Salves, poultices, and plasters

>Digital compression, if the cyst is soft and located over a bony prominence.

To deal with digital mucous cysts it’s beneficial to:

*Consume plenty of protective phytoestrogens daily (soy protein, flax seed, whole grains, sprouts, parsley, apples, seaweeds, cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, kale, bok choy).

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified (chlorine-free) water.

*Consume organic foods as much as possible.

*Consider regular liver and/or colon cleanses.

*Review my candida post.

*Maintain optimal weight.

*Ensure regular (minimum 2/day) bowel movements.

*Increase fiber intake because it binds toxins to carry them out of the body.

*Eliminate toxic/chemical/environmental exposures as much as possible.

*Eliminate processed foods laden with additives, pesticides, etc.

*Eliminate non-organic dairy, meat, poultry, etc.

*Eliminate fish from industrial waterways or fish farms.

*Eliminate synthetic hormone use.

*Eliminate food/drinks stored in plastic, aluminum, Styrofoam, etc.

*Eliminate microwaved foods, especially in the above containers.
