Living With Dry Hair

A Natural Approach To Health

Living With Dry Hair

I had a question the other day about dry hair.

Your hair can be dry because your scalp doesn’t make enough oil to moisturize your hair, or your hair lets moisture escape.

Hair has no natural lubrication.

It relies on oils made in your hair root to keep your hair moisturized and looking great.

Sometimes hair doesn’t make enough oil, which leads to dry hair.

Likewise, roots in overdrive lead to oily and greasy hair.

As you age, your hair naturally makes less oil.

Since your hair roots are under your skin, dry scalp goes along with dry hair.

Dry scalp peels and sheds, leading to dandruff flakes on your shoulders.

Each strand of healthy hair has a protective layer called the cuticle.

The cuticle shields your hair from heat damage.

In a healthy cuticle, the layers lie tightly together and keep moisture in.

When a cuticle’s layers separate and peel away from hair, its ability to hold moisture is compromised – some oil escapes.

Several things can damage your hair:

>Over-washing or using a harsh shampoo strips away your hair’s natural oils.

>Blow drying your hair too often – especially when you apply alcohol-based styling products first.

>Using heated hair straighteners or curling irons.

>Exposing your hair to lots of sun, wind, or dry air.

>Applying chemical treatments, including dyes, perms, and relaxers.

To deal with dry hair it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.

*Use apple cider vinegar and sage tea as a rinse.

*Ginkgo biloba improves circulation to your scalp.

*Eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables and low in starch.  Fruits and vegetables contain flavonoids, which provide protection for hair follicles.

*Eat plenty of foods high in biotin and/or take supplemental biotin.  Biotin is needed for healthy hair and skin.  Good food sources include brown rice, bulgur, green peas, lentils, oats, soybeans, sunflower seeds, and walnuts.

*Don’t eat foods containing raw eggs.  Raw eggs are high in avidin, a protein that binds to biotin and prevents it from being absorbed.  Cooked eggs are acceptable.

*Lie head down on a slant board 15 minutes a day to allow the blood to reach your scalp.  Massage your scalp daily.

*Use shampoos and conditioners containing biotin and silica.  Aloe vera gel, vitamins C and E, and jojoba oils also are very good for your hair.  Conditioners containing chamomile, marigold, ginseng, and/or passionflower help to keep hair healthy as well.

*Hair is fragile when it’s wet.  Gently pat your hair dry and squeeze out remaining moisture with a towel.

*Cover your hair when it’s exposed to sunlight.  Long exposure to sunlight and seawater can damage your hair.

*Avoid rough treatment.  Don’t use a brush or fine-toothed comb, or towel-dry your hair.  Also, don’t use a blow-dryer or other heated appliances on your hair; let it dry naturally.  Don’t comb your hair until it’s dry, as wet hair tends to break off.  Use a pick to put wet hair in place.  Don’t wear right ponytails, cornrows, or other styles that pull on your hair.

*Avoid crash diets and diets that neglect any of the food groups.  These can cause deficiencies in nutrients that are detrimental to your hair.

*Increase toxin-free, natural hair care products (ProSante).

*Decrease toxic shampoos, conditioners, mousse, gel, spray, etc.

*Decrease perms, colors, tints, highlights, treatments loaded with toxic substances affecting your hair and scalp and whole body.

*Decrease chlorinated shower/bath water (purchase a shower filter).

*Decrease use of chlorinated pools and hot tubs.
