Living With Flatulence

I had a question the other day about flatulence.

Flatulence is another word for having gas.

Gas (flatus) is made in your stomach and intestines as your body breaks down food into energy.

All people pass gas, some people more than others.

It’s normal to pass gas 6-20 times per day.

Common causes of gas are:

Swallowed air.  If swallowed air isn’t burped up, it passes through your digestive tract and is released through your anus as flatus.

Excessive air swallowing may cause hiccups.

Foods and beverages.  The amount of gas different foods cause varies from person to person.

And the foods making gas with odor may be different for every person too.

Constipation.  This can cause bloating but usually doesn’t increase gas.

Medicines or nutritional supplements.  Both prescription and nonprescription medicines, as well as dietary supplements, can cause bloating and gas as side effects.

A medical condition, like a bowel obstruction or Crohn’s disease.

Changes in hormone levels.  It’s common for women to have bloating just before their periods because their bodies retain fluid.

You may be able to prevent gas by changing your eating and drinking habits.

Occasionally gas is a symptom of a medical condition needing treatment.

Examples of gas-producing foods are:

>Vegetables like artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers, green peppers, onions, peas, radishes, and raw potatoes.

>Beans and other legumes.

>Fruits like apricots, bananas, melons, peaches, pears, prunes, and raw apples.

>Wheat and wheat bran.

>Eggs.

>Carbonated drinks, fruit drinks, beer, and red wine.

>Fried and fatty goods.

>Sugar and sugar substitutes.

>Milk and other dairy products, especially in people who have trouble digesting lactose, the main sugar found in milk.

>Packaged foods containing lactose, like breads, cereal, and salad dressing.

To deal with flatulence it’s important to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush.

*Maintain good bowel health; review my blog post on poop http://bit.ly/14mYTzE

*Increase your essential fats (flax oil, olive oil, Omega-3 oils).

*Eat lots of fresh, raw fruits and veggies.

*Consider fresh juicing.

*Eat a fiber-rich diet.

*Consider a liver, gallbladder and/or colon cleanse.

*Consider enemas.

*Get regular exercise.

*Practice good stress and relaxation techniques.

*Take a natural calcium/magnesium supplement because this supports bowel function.

*Discover “hidden” allergies and sensitivities as discussed above.

*Eliminate toxic exposures of all kinds.

*Eliminate caffeine or other stimulants.
