Living With Neutropenia

A Natural Approach To Health

Living With Neutropenia

I had a question the other day about neutropenia.

People with neutropenia have an unusually low number of cells called neutrophils.

Neutrophils are cells in your immune system that attack bacteria and other organisms when they invade your body.

Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell.

Your bone marrow creates these cells.

They then travel in your bloodstream and move to areas of infection.

They release chemicals to kill invading microorganisms.

Neutropenia itself often doesn’t cause symptoms.

In some cases, people only learn they have neutropenia when they have a blood test for an unrelated reason.

But people may have other symptoms from infection or the underlying problem causing the neutropenia.

Infections can occur as a complication of neutropenia.

They occur most often in your mucous membranes, like the inside of your mouth and your skin.

These infections can appear as:

>Ulcers

>Abscesses

>Rashes

>Wounds taking a long time to heal

Fever is also a common symptom of infection.

When deciding on treatment, health care providers consider the cause and severity of the neutropenia.

Mild cases may not need any treatment.

People with neutropenia often need to take special steps to prevent infections.

To deal with neutropenia it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water.

*Astragalus boosts your immune system.  It’s also a powerful antioxidant and protects your liver from toxins (don’t use if you have a fever).

*Bayberry, fenugreek, hawthorn, horehound, licorice root, and red clover all enhance your immune system (don’t use licorice root if pregnant or nursing, have diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, high blood pressure, or a history of stroke).

*Black radish, dandelion, and milk thistle help to cleanse your liver and your bloodstream.  Your liver is the organ of detoxification and must function optimally.

*Begin a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables (preferably raw) plus nuts, seeds, grains, and other foods high in fiber.

*Include in your diet chlorella, garlic, and pearl barley.  These foods contain germanium, a trace element beneficial for your immune system.

*Consume “green drinks” daily.  The best contain a wide variety of plants and are organic.

*Avoid animal products, processed foods, sugar, and soda.

*Follow a fasting program once a month to rid your body of toxins that can weaken your immune system.

*Be sure to get enough sleep.  As much as possible, avoid stress.

*Get regular moderate exercise (but don’t overdo it).  Exercise reduces stress and elevates mood, which has a positive effect on immune response.

*Avoid overeating.

*Don’t smoke or consume beverages containing alcohol or caffeine.

*Don’t take any recreational drugs.
