Living With Polycystic Kidney Disease

I had a question the other day about polycystic kidney disease.

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the formation of cysts in the kidneys.

Symptoms caused by cyst formation in the kidneys include high blood pressure, pain on the sides of your body between your last rib and your hip, blood in your urine and progressively poor function of your kidneys.

In about 60% of cases, polycystic kidney disease eventually progresses to cause end stage renal disease, requiring renal replacement therapy, either dialysis or renal transplantation.

Polycystic kidney disease isn’t just a kidney disorder and other organ systems of your body can potentially be affected by the development of cysts.

The specific symptoms present in each person depend on the specific organ systems involved.

The liver, pancreas, a membrane covering the spinal cord and brain, the prostate, and the glands of the male reproductive tract that produce fluid that’s part of semen may become involved.

Abnormalities affecting your heart and blood vessels may also occur in people with polycystic kidney disease.

Polycystic kidney disease usually doesn’t become apparent until your 4th or 5th decade and used to be called “adult” polycystic kidney disease.

However, it’s been reported in children and infants.

Polycystic kidney disease is caused by mutations of one of two genes that create certain proteins essential for the proper health of your kidneys and other parts of your body.

Approximately 85% have the most aggressive form of the disease; those with the other form progress to kidney insufficiency about 20 years later.

To deal with polycystic kidney disease, it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 8 cups of purified water daily, which cleanses and flushes your system.

*Take 5-10 alfalfa every hour or 2 to alkalize your body chemistry and address inflammation.

*Avoid refined sugar, alcohol, and dairy products.

*During an attack, drink lots of purified water.  You can add freshly squeezed lemon juice and you may alternate with cranberry juice.  You can try applying warmth (hot water bottle, heating pad, castor oil packs, etc.).

*If prone to these, carefully assess your diet and lifestyle with a holistic health care provider.

*Seek medical attention for painful or prolonged attacks or if fever or other symptoms develop as lodged stones are a serious concern.
