Living With Retinitis Pigmentosa

I had a question the other day about retinitis pigmentosa.

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is an inherited disorder characterized by progressive peripheral vision loss and night vision difficulties leading to central vision loss.

It affects approximately 100,000 people in the United States.

The retina is the innermost layer that lines your eyeball.

It contains photoreceptor cells directly connected to your brain by the optic nerve.

Retinitis pigmentosa causes these photoreceptor cells to degenerate over time.

Presenting signs and symptoms of RP vary, but the classic ones are:

>Night blindness (hallmark) – usually the earliest symptom of RP

>Vision loss, usually peripheral; in advanced cases, central vision loss

>Seeing flashes of light

An accurate diagnosis can be difficult to obtain, but it’s getting better with new technology.

There’s currently no cure for RP.

Nonetheless, it’s essential to help people maximize the vision they do have.

To deal with retinitis pigmentosa it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily.

*Increase your intake of essential fats (flax oil, Omega-3 oils, etc.).

*Increase your vitamin A intake to 15,000 IU daily.

*Consider herbs such as Eyebright and Bilberry.

*Use Enfuselle products.

*Try warm compresses (can use moist, warm regular tea bag).

*Have a diet rich in bioflavonoids (berries, colorful veggies, etc.).

*Eliminate toxic cosmetics, eye care, and personal care products.

*Eliminate toxic household and laundry cleaners.

*Eliminate poor air quality, which could be irritating.

*Eliminate chlorinated shower/bath water, which could be irritating.

*Eliminate “hidden” allergies or sensitivities, which may aggravate your eyes.

*Avoid free radical damage; check heavy metal toxicity.

*Eliminate smoking.

*Eliminate hydrogenated or trans fats, sugar and white flour.
