Living With Sciatica

I had a question the other day about sciatica.

Sciatica is pain, tingling, or numbness produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to your sciatic nerve.

Your sciatic nerve is formed by your nerve roots coming out of your spinal cord into your lower back.

It goes down through your buttock, then its branches extend down the back of your leg to your ankle and foot.

The most common cause of sciatica is a bulging or ruptured disc in your spine pressing against your nerve roots leading to your sciatic nerve.

But sciatica also can be a symptom of other conditions affecting your spine, like narrowing of your spinal canal, bone spurs (small, bony growths that form along joints) caused by arthritis, or nerve root compression caused by injury.

In rare cases, sciatica can also be caused by conditions not involving your spine, like tumors or pregnancy.

Symptoms of sciatica include pain beginning in your back or buttock and moving down your leg and may move into your foot.

Weakness, tingling, or numbness in your leg may also occur.

>Sitting, standing for a long time, and movements causing your spine to flex (like knee-to-chest exercises) may make symptoms worse.

>Walking, lying down, and movements extending your spine (like press-ups) may relieve symptoms.

In many cases, sciatica will improve and go away with time.

To deal with sciatica it’s beneficial to:

*Avoiding sitting (unless it’s more comfortable than standing).

*Increase weight-bearing exercises

*Alternating lying down with short walks.  Increase your walking distance as you’re able to without pain.

*Lose weight to take some pressure off your joints; you can follow our weight loss blog at blog.dickandlenay.com.

*Stop smoking.

*Eat calcium-rich foods.

*Take natural supplements.

*Get plenty of vitamin D.

*Eat fresh (not canned) pineapple and/or papaya because they contain enzymes that reduce inflammation.

*Explore the use of Arnica (homeopathic remedy).

*Consider Horsetail (herb) tea or extract.

*Eliminate acid-forming food and drinks (coffee, soda pop, dairy, red meat, processed foods, sugar, white flour products)

Recommendations:

It’s essential to use:  Vita-Lea, Protein, Calcium/Magnesium, Vitamin D, Alfalfa, OmegaGuard, GLA.

It’s important to use:  B-Complex, Vitamin C, VitalMag, Optiflora, Zinc.

It’s beneficial to use:  CoQHeart, EZ-Gest, Vivix, Joint Health Complex, Pain Relief Complex.
