As always, Fridays are devoted to your questions. I had a question this week about skin problems, in particular psoriasis, and how certain foods can have an effect. Psoriasis is a skin disorder. According to WebMD, it is characterized by skin cells that multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. As underlying cells reach the skin’s surface and die, their sheer volume causes raised, red plaques covered with white scales. Psoriasis typically occurs on the knees, elbows, and scalp, but can also affect the torso, palms, and soles of the feet. There are several different types of psoriasis. This is a very difficult and frustrating disease to treat. It comes and goes in cycles over a lifetime. There are medications to help clear up the patches of red, scaly skin, but there is no cure. Recent research indicates an abnormality in the immune system may be the key cause of psoriasis. A majority of people with a flare-up report a recent emotional trauma. Most doctors believe these external stressors are triggers for an inherited defect in immune function.
This is where our talk about healthy foods fit in. There are a lot of people who think that their diet affects their psoriasis. While you may have specific food triggers, so far there is no clinical research proving a dietary connection to psoriasis. Know also that there are dozens of psoriasis diets and theories out there, and most of them don’t agree with each other, which creates all kinds of confusion. There is no diet that will “cure” psoriasis.
With that in mind, I will give you my recommendations, which are based on strengthening your immune system and discovering your own personal possible food/environmental triggers. My first recommendation is that you drink lots of purified water. This helps to flush out any toxins in your system. Eliminate dairy, sugar and/or wheat products (try gluten-free) for 4-6 weeks. Pay attention to your symptoms. As you slowly add these foods back into your diet, watch and see if your body reacts to them. This should help you determine if you have a specific food trigger. Increase your omega-3 essential fats. Next, I would ensure optimal bowel functioning. I would do a healthy liver/colon cleanse and increase your fiber intake. And lastly I would choose non-toxic personal care and laundry products.
If you are interested in supplements,
ESSENTIAL for skin conditions are: GLA, OmegaGuard, lecithin, Optiflora, alfalfa, Herb-Lax, fiber, DTX, CarotoMax and FlavoMax.
IMPORTANT supplements would be: protein, vitamin C, B-complex, vitamin E, zinc, and vitamin D.
BENEFICIAL would be: garlic, NutriFeron, Immunity I, CoQHeart, CoEnzymeQ10, VitalMag, Vivix, and the Enfuselle skin care line.
Please make sure your supplements are all natural with nothing artificial added.
