You know how to “feed” your car. You know how to feed your pets. You know how to feed your lawn, vegetable garden, fruit trees and houseplants. But do you know how to feed your cells? Good health begins with healthy cells. Your cells don’t care about how a food tastes, or looks, or is presented, or how much it costs or what restaurant you ate it at, or who cooked it. All your cells care about is the nutrients they can get and use from the food you eat.
Do you know how important protein is? Do you know what amino acids are? Do you know the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates? Do you know what enzymes do? Do you know we have to have bacteria in our system to be healthy? Vitamins and minerals – are you supplying what is needed? And what about fat? What about “saturated”, “hydrogenated” or “trans fats”? Which is good? Which is bad? Do you need to eat fat? What kind and how much? Are you as confused as most people?
We’re going to talk about the basics of nutrients you need to feed your cells in order to keep and build health.
Have you ever thought about what your body is made of? I don’t mean bones, skin, and organs. I mean at a deeper level. What are bones, skin, and organs made out of? You know your car is made from metal, wires, rubber, and plastic. You know your house is made from bricks, wood, shingles, wires, pipes, and drywall. But, what are these products made of? Various raw materials are needed to make these products. Without sufficient raw materials the products can’t be produced. With poorly made raw materials the finished product will be of poor quality. Either would create a substandard house or car. So it is with your body.
What are the raw materials needed to create your body? Basically, we are made from carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. We are going to review the things you can control your consumption of, so you can understand what is needed to fuel, create and fix your body.
Oxygen
Why do we need oxygen? Oxygen is needed by each and every cell in your body for energy and to keep a healthy internal environment that deters disease-causing organisms from settling in. Without oxygen we die within minutes.
How do we increase oxygen levels?
*Exercise
*Practice deep breathing. Practice filling your lungs to capacity. Try yoga, tai chi, or qigong.
*Eliminate lifestyle choices that hurt oxygen levels, like smoking.
*Avoid areas of air pollution. Beware of work places with toxic fumes.
*Ensure clean indoor air quality. Use non-toxic household cleaners.
*Avoid allergens. Support a healthy respiratory, cardiovascular and immune system.
Tomorrow we will talk about water.
