Living With Gout

I had a question the other day about gout.

Gout is caused by too much uric acid in your blood.

Most of the time, having too much uric acid isn’t harmful.

Many people with high levels in their blood never get gout.

But when uric acid levels in your blood are too high, the uric acid may form hard crystals in your joints.

The most common sign of gout is an attack of swelling, tenderness, redness and sharp pain in your big toe that happens at night.

You can also get gout attacks in your foot, ankle, or knees.

The attacks can last a few days or many weeks before the pain goes away.

Another attack may not happen for months or years.

Even if your pain from gout is gone, the buildup of uric acid that led to your gout attack can still harm your joints.

Your chances of getting gout are higher if you are overweight, drink too much alcohol, or eat too much meat and fish that are high in chemicals called purines.

Some medicines, like water pills (diuretics), can also bring on gout.

DON’T TAKE ASPIRIN to ease the pain during a gout attack, because aspirin can make gout worse.

It can actually raise the uric acid level in your blood.

To deal with gout at home it’s beneficial to:

*Cleanse and flush your body.

*Drink 8-12 cups of purified water during attacks (can add freshly squeezed lemon juice if you want).

*Drink 6-8 cups of water daily.

*Discover and avoid triggers.

*Alfalfa is extremely helpful for inflammation; generous amounts may be needed during an attack to reduce your uric acid level; consider 5-10 alfalfa every hour or 2 to alkalize your body chemistry and address inflammation; try as a tea.

*Avoid meat, cheese, seafood and alcohol during attacks and consume plenty of raw fruits and vegetables.

*Pure cherry juice is beneficial, as well as fresh cherries and strawberries.

*Avoid deep-fried, fatty foods.

*Lose excess weight.

*Fresh, raw pineapple and papaya contain bromelain, an anti-inflammatory enzyme.

*Consider liver support and/or a liver cleanse.
