Living With Atrial Fibrillation

I had a question the other day about atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) that starts in the upper parts (atria) of your heart.

Atrial fibrillation is common in people older than age 60.

Normally, your heart beats in a strong, steady rhythm.

In atrial fibrillation, a problem with your heart’s electrical system causes the atria to quiver, or fibrillate.

The quivering upsets the normal rhythm between the atria and the lower parts (ventricles) of your heart.

The lower parts may beat fast and without a regular rhythm.

Atrial fibrillation is dangerous because it greatly increases the risk of stroke.

If your heart doesn’t beat strongly, blood can pool in your atria.

Pooled blood is more likely to form clots.

If your heart pumps a clot into your bloodstream, the clot can travel to your brain and block blood flow, causing a stroke.

Atrial fibrillation can also lead to heart failure.

Conditions that damage or strain your heart commonly cause atrial fibrillation.

These include:

>High blood pressure.

>Coronary artery disease.

>Heart attack.

>Heart valve disease, especially diseases of the mitral valve.

Atrial fibrillation may also be caused by:

>Other medical problems, like lung disease, pneumonia, or a high thyroid level.

>Heart surgery.

>Heavy alcohol use.  Having more than 3 drinks a day over many years can cause long-lasting atrial fibrillation.  Binge drinking may also cause an episode of atrial fibrillation.

>Use of stimulants (caffeine, nicotine, medicines like decongestants, and illegal drugs like cocaine).

>Use of some prescription medicines (albuterol or theophylline).

Symptoms may include:

>Feeling dizzy or lightheaded.

>Feeling out of breath.

>Feeling weak and tired.

>A feeling that your heart is fluttering, racing, or pounding.

>A feeling that your heart is beating unevenly.

>Chest pain (angina).

>Fainting.

Atrial fibrillation is common and it may not cause obvious symptoms.

If you have any of the symptoms listed, see your health care provider.

Finding and treating atrial fibrillation right away can help you avoid serious problems.

A number of treatments may be used for atrial fibrillation.

Which treatments are best for you depend on the cause, your symptoms, and your risk of stroke.

To deal with atrial fibrillation and get heart healthy at home it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.

*Increase exercise and movement as much as possible.

*Increase stress and relaxation techniques:  yoga, meditation, prayer, deep breathing, etc.  Consider energy medicine.

*Address emotional connections.

*Increase fresh air, sunshine, connect with nature.

*Increase essential fats (flax oil, olive oil, Omega-3 oils).

*Increase fresh, raw fruits and veggies (organic when possible).

*Consider fresh juicing; consume fresh garlic and onions.

*Increase fiber intake; ensure good bowel function; avoid constipation; consider liver and/or colon cleanse.

*Consider an arterial cleansing program.

*Investigate use of herbs (hawthorn, valerian).

*Monitor blood pressure, cholesterol, triglyceride and homocysteine levels.

*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds (food and environmental).

*Decrease “hidden allergies”.

*Decrease any and all hydrogenated, trans fats, deep-fried foods, margarine, fast foods, etc.
