Living With Creutzfeldt-Jakob

I had a question the other day about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a degenerative brain disorder leading to dementia and, ultimately, death.

Symptoms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) sometimes resemble those of other dementia-like brain disorders, like Alzheimer’s, but Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease usually progresses much more rapidly.

Although serious, CJD is rare.

Worldwide, there’s an estimated 1 case of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease diagnosed per million people each year, most commonly in older adults.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is marked by rapid mental deterioration, usually within a few months.

Initial signs and symptoms of CJD typically include:

>Personality changes

>Anxiety

>Depression

>Memory loss

>Impaired thinking

>Blurred vision

>Insomnia

>Difficulty speaking

>Difficulty swallowing

>Sudden, jerky movements

As the disease progresses, mental symptoms worsen.

Most people eventually lapse into a coma.

Heart failure, respiratory failure, pneumonia or other infections are generally the cause of death.

The disease usually runs its course in about 7 months, although a few people may live 1-2 years after diagnosis.

The cause of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease appears to be abnormal versions of a kind of protein called a prion.

Normally, these proteins are harmless, but when they’re misshapen they become infectious and can wreak havoc on normal biological processes.

The risk of CJD is low.

The disease can’t be transmitted through coughing or sneezing, touching, or sexual contact.

Most cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease occur for unknown reasons, and no risk factors can be identified.

No effective treatment exists for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or any of its variants.

A number of drugs have been tested (including steroids, antibiotics and antiviral agents) and haven’t shown benefits.

For this reason, doctors focus on alleviating pain and other symptoms and on making people as comfortable as possible.

To deal with CJD it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily hydrates body and brain cells and flushes toxins (whether thirsty or not!).

*Anise, blessed thistle, and blue cohosh appear to sharpen brain power.

*Ginkgo biloba improves cerebral circulation, enhances brain function and memory, and destroys free radicals to protect brain cells.  Three times a day, place 1/2 dropperful of alcohol-free liquid extract under your tongue and hold it there for a few minutes before swallowing.  Or take 400 mg in capsule form 3 times daily.  (Don’t take if you have a bleeding disorder, or are scheduled for surgery or a dental procedure.)

*Gotu kola, ginseng, and mullein oil all aid with memory function.  (Don’t use ginseng if you have high blood pressure or are pregnant or nursing.)

*Valerian root promotes better sleep patterns when taken at bedtime.

*Eat a diet consisting of 50-75% raw foods, along with seeds, whole-grain cereals and breads, raw nuts, and low-fat yogurt and other soured products.  Eat Swiss cheese, brown rice, and plenty of fiber daily.

*Move your bowels daily.  Oat bran, rice bran, and a high-fiber diet are important.

*Keep active.  Exercising, walking, engaging in mental activity, and doing things you enjoy, like pursuing a hobby, are important.

*Seek out companionship and new experiences.

*Be sure to maintain a safe environment at home.

*Protect against head injury by wearing your seat belt and by wearing protective headgear when participating in activities like bicycle riding.

*Consider hair analysis to determine heavy metal toxicity.

*Keep brain active; engage in mental activities.

*Increase oxygen; deep breathing exercises, yoga, etc.

*Decrease any and all toxic exposures as they can harm brain cells and function.

*Decrease toxic cleaning, laundry and personal care products.

*Decrease toxins/heavy metals exposure (workplace, hobbies, etc.); avoid aluminum-containing items.

*Decrease chemical additives, preservatives, pesticides in foods.

*Avoid MSG and all artificial sweeteners as they are neurotoxins.
