Living With Age Spots

I had a question the other day about age spots.

Age spots, also called liver spots, are flat tan, brown or black spots.

They vary in size and usually appear on your face, hands, shoulders and arms.

Age spots are very common in adults older than age 50.

But, younger people can get them too, especially if they spend a lot of time in the sun.

Although age spots can look like cancerous growths, true age spots are harmless and don’t need treatment.

For cosmetic reasons, age spots can be lightened or removed.

However, preventing age spots (by avoiding the sun and using sunscreen) may be the easiest way to keep your skin’s youthful appearance.

Age spots typically develop in people with a fair complexion, but can be seen in those with darker skin.

Age spots:

>Are flat, oval areas of increased pigmentation

>Are usually tan, brown or black

>Occur on skin that’s had the most sun exposure over the years, like the backs of hands, tops of feet, face, shoulders and upper back

Age spots range from freckle size to more than 1/2 inch across and can group together, making them more prominent.

Age spots are caused mainly by years of exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun.

The use of commercial tanning lamps and tanning beds can also lead to developing age spots.

The color in the upper layer of skin giving your skin its normal color is called melanin.

UV light speeds up the production of melanin, creating a tan that helps protect deeper layers of skin from UV rays.

On areas of your skin with years of frequent and prolonged sun exposure, age spots appear when melanin becomes “clumped” or is made in particularly high concentrations.

To deal with age spots it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily as it hydrates body cells, thins mucus, and flushes toxins.

*Burdock, milk thistle, and red clover help clean your bloodstream.

*Ginkgo biloba improves circulation and is a potent antioxidant (don’t take if you have a bleeding disorder, or are scheduled for surgery or a dental procedure).

*Emu oil has shown good results on age spots.

*Eat a diet high in vegetable protein and consisting of 50% raw fruits and vegetables, plus fresh grains, cereals, seeds, and nuts.  Be aware seeds and nuts spoil quickly when subjected to heat and/or exposed to air.  Buy only vacuum-sealed raw nuts and seeds; keep tightly sealed once opened.

*Omit all animal protein from your diet for 1 month.

*Avoid caffeine, fried foods, saturated fats, red meat, processed foods, sugar, and tobacco.

*Follow a fasting program to cleanse your liver and rid your body of toxins.  A properly functioning liver and a clean colon are important.  Use black radish extract or dandelion root and beet juice along with 3 days of fasting a month with distilled water and fresh lemon, fruit, and vegetable juices.

*Limit sun exposure.

*Don’t use cleansing creams, especially hydrogenated, hardened creams.  Cleanse your skin with pure olive oil and a warm wet washcloth, then rinse with lemon juice and water.

*This has worked for some people:  At night, saturate a cotton ball with pure lemon juice and put it over the spots (but don’t apply it near your eyes).  There may be some tingling, but only for a few minutes.  If there’s no sign of irritation, apply morning and night.

*Keep a balanced pH.

*Use Enfuselle and/or ShakleeBaby skin care products.

*Eliminate toxic personal care, laundry and cleaning products.

*Quit smoking.

*Decrease exposure to chlorinated shower/bath water, pools and hot tubs.
