Living With Blepharitis

I had a question the other day about blepharitis.

Blepharitis is an inflammation of your eyelids.

It’s usually caused by too much bacteria ordinarily found on your skin, blockage of your eyelid’s oil glands, and occasionally allergies.

Blepharitis is a common eye condition.

It causes your eyelids to be reddened, itchy, and somewhat swollen and scaly-appearing at the base of your eyelashes.

It’s the most common cause of dry eyes.

A dysfunction of the eyelid’s oil glands that leads to blepharitis occurs because of a hormone imbalance.

Symptoms include:

>Feeling like something is in your eye

>Burning of your eye

>Sensitivity to light

>Red and swollen eyes or eyelids

>Blurry vision

>Dry eyes

>Crusting of your eyelashes

Blepharitis can’t be cured.

But, it can be treated and controlled through good eyelid hygiene.

Left untreated, blepharitis can cause more serious conditions like scarring or injury to your eye’s tissue.

To deal with blepharitis it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily.

*Warm eyebright, goldenseal, or mullein compresses are soothing and help reduce inflammation.  Prepare a tea using one of these herbs, cool it to a comfortably warm temperature, and soak a clean cloth or a piece of sterile cotton in it to make the compress.  Apply the compress and relax for 10-15 minutes.  Then make a fresh compress and gently wipe the edge of your eyelid and the area around and between your eyelashes to remove any scaly matter or dandruff-like debris.  Do this twice a day or as needed.  Use each compress only once before laundering or discarding it.

*Eat a well-balanced diet that emphasizes fresh, raw vegetables, plus grains, legumes, and fresh fruits.

*Keep your eyelids clean, especially along the edges, but don’t touch or rub your eyes except when necessary.  Always wash your hands before touching your eyes.

*Get enough sleep, and avoid eyestrain.  Anything that increases eye fatigue makes the discomfort worse.

*Increase your intake of essential fats (flax oil, Omega-3 oils, etc.).

*Have a diet rich in bioflavonoids (berries, colorful veggies, etc.).

*Eliminate hydrogenated or trans fats, sugar and white flour.

*Use Enfuselle products.

*Eliminate toxic cosmetics, eye care, and personal care products.

*Eliminate toxic household and laundry cleaners.

*Eliminate poor air quality, which could be irritating.

*Eliminate chlorinated shower/bath water, which could be irritating.

*Eliminate “hidden” allergies or sensitivities, which may aggravate your eyes.

*Avoid free radical damage; check heavy metal toxicity.

*Eliminate smoking.
