Living With Kidney Stones

I had a question the other day about kidney stones.

A kidney stone begins as a tiny piece of crystal in your kidney.

When urine leaves your kidney, it may carry the crystal out, or the crystal may stay in your kidney.

If the crystal stays in your kidney, over time more small crystals join it and form a larger kidney stone.

Most stones leave your kidney and travel through your urinary tract when they’re still small enough to pass easily out of your body.

Larger stones may become stuck in the tubes that carry urine from your kidney to your bladder.

This can cause pain and possibly block your urine from flowing to your bladder and out of your body.

The pain often gets worse over 15 to 60 minutes until it’s severe.

The pain may ease when the stone no longer blocks the flow of urine, and it often goes away when the stone passes into your bladder.

Symptoms of a kidney stone include sudden, severe pain that gets worse in waves.

Stones may cause intense pain in your back, side, abdomen, groin or genitals.

You may feel sick to your stomach and vomit.

You may have blood in your urine which can happen either with stones that stay in your kidney or with those that travel through your ureters.

You may also have frequent and painful urination, which may happen when the stone is in your ureter or after the stone has left your bladder and is in your urethra.

To deal with a kidney stone, it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 8 cups of purified water daily, which cleanses and flushes your system.

*Take 5-10 alfalfa every hour or 2 to alkalize your body chemistry and address inflammation.

*Avoid refined sugar, alcohol, and dairy products.

*During an attack, drink lots of purified water.  You can add freshly squeezed lemon juice and you may alternate with cranberry juice.  You can try applying warmth (hot water bottle, heating pad, castor oil packs, etc.).

*If prone to these, carefully assess your diet and lifestyle with a holistic health care provider.

*Seek medical attention for painful or prolonged attacks or if fever or other symptoms develop as lodged stones are a serious concern.
