Living With MERS

A Natural Approach To Health

MERS

Living With MERS

I had a question the other day about MERS.

MERS, or Middle East respiratory syndrome, is an illness caused by a virus called a coronavirus.

Coronaviruses are common globally.

Five different types can make people sick.

They also infect animals.

Although some coronaviruses cause mild to moderate upper respiratory illness, MERS, like SARS, can cause severe illness and death.

The most common symptoms are fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

To date, 636 cases have been confirmed in 18 countries, according to the most recent figures from the World Health Organization and the CDC.

Of those, 193 people have died.

There’s no cure for MERS, but the symptoms can be treated.

It most often spreads between people who are in close contact.

Infected people, for instance, have spread the virus to health care workers.

The virus doesn’t appear to spread easily among people in public settings, like a shopping mall.

The risk to the general public appears to be extremely low.

Public health officials believe it came from an animal but are still doing research.

The virus has been found in camels in Qatar, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

It’s also been found in a bat in Saudi Arabia.

Officials can’t say for sure if camels or bats are sources of the virus.

For now, they say camels, bats, and other animals may play a role in where the virus comes from and how it spreads.

No vaccine is available.

The virus is more dangerous for people with pre-existing conditions or problems with their immune systems.

The CDC suggests travelers watch their health, wash their hands often, and avoid people who are sick.

Travelers who recently went to countries where MERS has been found should watch their health when they return.

If the typical symptoms — cough, shortness of breath, and fever — develop within 14 days of travel to a country with MERS cases, travelers should contact their doctor and discuss their recent travel.

To deal with MERS it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily as it hydrates body and brain cells, thins mucus, and flushes toxins (whether thirsty or not!).

*Purify indoor air.

*Increase essential fats (flax oil, omega-3 oils, fish oils).

*Explore use of Oil of Oregano and Mullein oil.

*Consume plenty of fresh garlic and onions.

*Switch to safe, nontoxic cleaners, laundry and personal care products that don’t emit toxic fumes/residues.

*Discover “hidden” allergies/sensitivities (food and/or environmental) that may trigger or aggravate condition.

*Dairy products are very mucus forming.

*Review my post on candida.

*Eliminate smoking, second-hand smoke, environmental pollutants.

*Explore the use of hydrotherapy and/or castor oil or onion packs.

*Consider a vaporizer.

*Avoid sugar as it “turns off” your immune system.
