Living With Muscular Dystrophy

I had a question the other day about muscular dystrophy.

Muscular dystrophy is a group of inherited diseases where your muscles that control movement progressively weaken.

In some forms of the disease, your heart and other organs are also affected.

There are 9 major forms of muscular dystrophy:

>Myotonic.  The most common form of muscular dystrophy in adults, myotonic muscular dystrophy affects both men and women, and it usually appears any time from early childhood to adulthood.

>Duchenne.  The most common form of muscular dystrophy in children, Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects only males.  It appears between the ages of 2-6.

>Becker.  This form is similar to Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but it’s much milder.  Symptoms appear later and progress more slowly.  It usually appears between the ages of 2-16 but can appear as late as age 25.

>Limb-girdle.  This appears in the teens to early adulthood and affects males and females.  It causes progressive weakness that begins in the hips and moves to the shoulders, arms, and legs.

>Facioscapulohumeral.  This refers to the muscles that move your face, shoulder blade, and upper arm bone.  This form appears in the teens to early adulthood and affects males and females.

>Congenital.  Congenital means present at birth.  Congenital muscular dystrophies progress slowly and affect males and females.

>Oculopharyngeal.  Oculopharyngeal means eye and throat.  This form appears in men and women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

>Distal.  This group of rare diseases affects adult men and women.  It causes weakness and wasting of the muscles of your forearms, hands, lower legs, and feet.

>Emery-Dreifuss.  This rare form of muscular dystrophy appears from childhood to the early teens and affects only males.  It causes muscle weakness and wasting in your shoulders, upper arms, and lower legs.

Muscular dystrophy is caused by defects in certain genes.

Most of the muscular dystrophies are a form of inherited disease called X-linked disorders that mothers can transmit to their sons even though the mothers themselves are unaffected by the disease.

A few muscular dystrophies aren’t inherited at all and happen because of a new gene abnormality or mutation.

Scientists have discovered and continue to search for the genetic defects that cause muscular dystrophy.

Through advances in medical care, people with muscular dystrophy are living longer than ever before.

To deal with muscular dystrophy it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.

*Review my post on keeping clean on the inside.

*Breathe easier; purify indoor air.

*Increase essential fats (flax oil, olive oil, Omega-3 oils).

*Consume a 50% raw food diet:  lots of fresh, raw fruits and veggies (organic when possible).  Include fresh juicing.

*Consider liver and colon cleanses.

*Increase exercise, deep breathing, relaxation, stress management and energy techniques.

*Increase fresh air, sunshine, connect to nature, adequate rest.

*Deal with any underlying emotional issues.

*Consider skin brushing, Epsom salt baths, hydrotherapy or add baking soda to bath water.

*Ensure regular (2 per day) bowel movements.

*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds.

*Investigate and eliminate “hidden” allergies/sensitivities.

*Decrease or eliminate any and all hydrogenated, trans fats, and deep-fried foods.

*Decrease or eliminate sugar-laden foods, white flour products, simple carbs.

*Decrease or eliminate processed, instant, chemical-laden, “lifeless” foods.

*Decrease or eliminate smoking, alcohol, coffee, soda pop, processed juices.

*Become educated about all possible side effects and detrimental influences of any medications or treatment procedures you are taking or considering.

*Research and address underlying Candida issues.

*Avoid MSG and artificial sweeteners as they are neurotoxins.

*Explore dental amalgam toxicity.

So basically your telling us to live our crappy lives even worse by taking the fun out of eating?? Lol that sucks majorly. I don’t mean for that to sound rude or anything I promise. Just that our muscles are already taking over the body making it hard to enjoy most activities and now were being told that the joy of eating should be taken too. I realize your trying to better out health. But sometimes it’s not always the case. Sometimes the other joys in life in which we actually can enjoy shouldn’t have to suffer along with the rest of the body. Maybe??

Hi Keisha! Thanks for your comment. I’m not trying to take the joy out of eating at all. I’m merely encouraging you to decrease/eliminate processed foods. The toxins that processed foods put in your body are horrible. I do a webinar on Monday nights about healthy eating and how it contributes to your overall health. If that’s something you’d be interested in attending, let me know and I’ll send you an invitation. Eating healthy foods is so enjoyable in so many ways.
