Living With Traumatic Brain Injury

I had a question the other day about traumatic brain injury.

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can range from a mild concussion to a severe head injury.

It’s caused by a blow to your head or body, a wound breaking through your skull (like from a gunshot), a fall, or another injury jarring or shaking your brain.

This can cause bruising, swelling, or tearing of brain tissue.

With rest, most people fully recover from a mild brain injury.

But some people who’ve had a severe or repeated brain injury may have long-lasting problems with movement, learning, or speaking.

Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury range from mild to severe and can last for hours, days, weeks, or even months.

These symptoms may include:

>Not thinking clearly, or having trouble remembering new information.

>Having headaches, vision problems, or dizziness.

>Feeling sad, nervous, or easily angered.

>Sleeping more or less than usual.

If you develop these kinds of symptoms at any time after a head injury—even much later—call your health care professional.

If your brain has been damaged you may need treatment and rehabilitation on a long-term basis.

This might include:

>Physical and occupational therapy to help you regain the ability to do daily activities and live as independently as possible.

>Speech and language therapy to help you understand and produce language, organize daily tasks and develop problem-solving methods.

>Counseling to help you understand your thoughts and learn ways to cope with your feelings.

>Social support and support groups so you have a chance to talk with people who’re going through the same things you are.

You may need to try different types of treatment.

Treatment can help you feel more in control of your emotions, have fewer symptoms, and enjoy life again.

To deal with traumatic brain injury it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily to hydrate and flush toxins.

*Alfalfa is a good source of needed minerals.  Take 2,000 mg daily in capsule or extract form.

*Black cohosh, hyssop, and lobelia are beneficial for helping control your central nervous system and they have a calming effect.  For best results, they should be used on an alternating basis (don’t use black cohosh if you’re pregnant, have a chronic disease, or have liver problems).

*Avoid the herb sage.

*Eat cultured milk products like yogurt and kefir.

*Include beet greens, chard, eggs, green leafy vegetables, raw cheese, raw milk, raw nuts, seeds, and soybeans in your diet.

*Eat fish regularly (twice a week) and take a fish oil supplement.

*Drink fresh “live” juices made from beets, carrots, green beans, green leafy vegetables, peas, red grapes, and seaweed for concentrated nutrients.

*Eat small meals, don’t drink large quantities of liquids at once, and take 2 tablespoons of olive oil daily.

*Avoid alcoholic beverages, animal protein, fried foods, artificial sweeteners like aspartame (Equal, NutraSweet, etc.), caffeine, and nicotine.  Avoid refined foods and sugar.

*Get regular moderate exercise to improve circulation.

*As much as possible, avoid stress and tension.

*Consider liver and colon cleanses.

*Increase fresh air, sunshine, connect to nature, adequate rest.

*Consider skin brushing, Epsom salt baths, hydrotherapy.

*Ensure regular (2 per day) bowel movements.

*Decrease toxic exposures of all kinds.

*Become educated about all possible side effects and detrimental influences of any medications or treatment procedures you’re taking or considering.

*Explore dental amalgam toxicity.

*May need extra magnesium (to bowel tolerance).

*Avoid aluminum (pans, foil, deodorant, etc.)

*Consider hair analysis for heavy metals toxicity.
