Living With Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

I had a question the other day about urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Your urinary tract is the system that makes urine and carries it out of your body.

It includes your bladder and kidneys and the tubes connecting them.

When germs get into this system, they can cause an infection.

Most urinary tract infections are bladder infections.

The germs that usually cause these infections live in your large intestine and are found in your stool.

If these germs get inside your urethra, they can travel up into your bladder and kidneys and cause an infection.

Women tend to get more bladder infections than men.

This is probably because women have shorter urethras, so it’s easier for germs to move up to their bladders.

You may be more likely to get an infection if you don’t drink enough fluids, you have diabetes, or you’re pregnant.

The chance you’ll get an infection is higher if you have any problem blocking the flow of urine from your bladder, for example kidney stones or an enlarged prostate gland.

You may have an infection if you have these symptoms:

-You feel pain or burning when you urinate.

-You feel like you have to urinate often, but not much urine comes out when you do.

-Your urine is cloudy or smells bad.

-You have pain on one side of your back under your ribs.

-You have fever and chills.

To deal with a urinary tract infection, it’s beneficial to:

*Drink 6-8 cups of purified water daily, which cleanses and flushes your system.  Drink at least 1 cup per hour.

*Cranberry is one of the best herbal remedies for UTIs.  Quality cranberry juice produces hippuric acid in your urine, which acidifies your urine and inhibits bacterial growth.  Other components in cranberry juice prevent bacteria from sticking to the lining of your bladder.  Drink 1 quart of pure, sugar-free only, organic cranberry juice (found in a health food store) daily.  If pure cranberry juice isn’t available, cranberry capsules can be substituted.  Always take these with a large glass of water.  Avoid commercial cranberry juice cocktail products (they have very little pure cranberry juice in them, plus they have high fructose corn syrup or other sweeteners).

*Birch leaf tea is a natural diuretic and reduces some of the pain associated with UTIs.

*Dandelion tea or extract acts as a diuretic and liver cleanser, and helps relieve discomfort.

*Hydrangea is good for stimulating your kidneys and flushing them clean.

*Fresh blueberries are a very effective antioxidant.  They may be as useful as cranberries in prevent urinary tract infections.  The herb bilberry, a type of blueberry, is also good.

*Buchu tea is good if you have a burning sensation when you urinate.

*Marshmallow root increases the acidity of your urine, inhibiting bacterial growth.  Drink 1 quart of marshmallow root tea daily.

*Include celery, parsley, and watermelon in your diet.  These foods act as natural diuretics and cleansers.  Celery and parsley juice or extract can be purchased at a health food store or made fresh at home.

*Avoid citrus fruits; these produce alkaline urine which encourages bacterial growth.

*Stay away from alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, coffee, chocolate, refined or processed foods, and simple sugars.

*Perform a 1-3-day cleansing fast.

*Take a probiotic with every meal, especially if on an antibiotic.

*Don’t delay emptying your bladder.  Making sure you urinate every 2-3 hours while awake can help.

*Wear white cotton underwear; nylon underwear should be avoided.

*Practice good personal hygiene.

*Take plentiful amounts of alfalfa throughout the day.

*Review my post on Candida, because many times this can be a significant influence.

*Avoid toxic feminine care products.
